Chasing and busting the Greenfield, IA Tornado – May 21, 2024
Location: Greenfield, IA | Date: May 21, 2024 | Storm Type: Fast-moving supercell tornado
This tornado was part of a violent outbreak in southwestern Iowa, producing fast-moving supercells that challenged even experienced chasers. Forward storm motion reached nearly 50–55 mph, creating dangerous conditions and making intercepts extremely difficult. The tornado carved a destructive path through Page, Taylor, Adams, and Adair counties.
Storm Chase Summary
During the chase, a massive tree fell across a road, forcing a detour via backroads. Unfortunately, this led to a deep ditch incident that ended the chase early. Despite this, I captured the tornadogenesis of the Greenfield tornado along with a couple of weaker tornadoes. Key lessons from this chase include the importance of staying ahead of fast-moving storms, planning alternate routes, and always being prepared for unexpected obstacles.

Storm Details
- Storm Forward Motion: ~50–55 mph
- Path: Page, Taylor, Adams, and Adair counties
- Damage: Downed trees, blocked roads, scattered structural damage
- Intercept Outcome: Partial success – captured tornadogenesis and weaker tornadoes
- Chase Notes: Off-road incident due to ditch, highlighted importance of planning and safety
Vault Takeaways
- Plan alternate routes before chasing fast-moving supercells.
- Factor in storm forward motion — roads and traffic can limit your intercept ability.
- Always scout for hidden ditches or obstacles — never assume grass is safe.
- Carry a primary and backup tow strap for unexpected off-road situations.
- Even “busts” can provide valuable footage of tornadogenesis and storm structure.
